Responding that both knew that it is immortality to me to be bound up with you,” Cameron willingly accepted the assignment. Costuming family and friends, she made some 245 exposures to arrive at the handful she wanted for the book. Ultimately—and predictably—she was unhappy with the way her photographs looked reduced in scale and translated into wood engravings, and she chose to issue a deluxe edition, at her own risk, that included a dozen full size photographic prints in each of two volumes.. Person in Photograph: Adolf de Meyer (American (born France), Paris 1868-1946 Los Angeles, California). Date: 1905.With his brow arched beneath a tilted hat and hand elegantly grasping a stark white scarf, de Meyer dons a mysterious alter ego. Like de Meyer, Sears was involved with the two major groups devoted to art photography: the Photo-Secession and the Linked Ring Brotherhood. The two artists may have met through a mutual friend, the photographer F. Holland Day, who included their work in his exhibition "New School of American Photography," on view in London in 1900 and Paris the following year. Francisco Goya (1746-1828) was a Spanish painter and printmaker. Considered the most important Spanish artists of the time, he is honored as one of the last of the Old Masters and one of the first of the Moderns. His early paintings were optimistic and jolly, as the years passed, his works became very pessimistic. A highly regarded portrait painter, Goya did this portrait of himself as an artist in a studio in 1785, when he was in his about 39.

Adelaide, Countess of Yarborough. Disdéri & Cie., photographer about 1864 This photograph sits in an album that intermixes pages of cartes-de-visite with full-page photocollages. Victorian collagists took their photographic materials primarily from cartes-de-visite. Patented by André Adolphe Eugène Disdéri in 1854, the carte-de-visite was easily and inexpensively printed (84.XD.1157.2179). By the 1860s, _cartomania _had taken hold. It became customary to exchange cartes-de-visite on social calls. These small studio portraits measure 3 ½ x 2 1/8 inches, about the size of a playing card. It is not known whether they removed the photographs from the thick cardstock on which they had been mounted or obtained unmounted prints from the photographer. People also collected cards of the royal family, actors, and politicians (see for example, the image of Princess Christina of the United Kingdom found in this album).
