Nijinsky in "Danse siamoise" from the "Orientales". Artist: Eugène Druet (French, Paris 1867-1916 Paris). Dimensions: Image: 20.3 x 14.6 cm (8 x 5 3/4 in.). Date: 1910.This photograph of Vaslav Nijinsky is one a series taken by Druet-a self-described "amateur photographer" best known today for his dazzling images of Rodin's sculpture-at the request of the painter Jacques-Emile Blanche, in the latter's garden in Passy. The dancer is seen in midair executing one of the jumps for which he was famous and wearing the costume designed by Léon Bakst for "Danse siamoise," a solo in Les Orientales, choreographed by Michel Fokine. Three years later the angular, brutally violent steps of Nijinsky's choreography for the Stravinsky ballet The Rite of Spring would cause a riot at its Paris premiere and become, along with the 1913 Armory Show in New York, one of the birthplaces of modern art's predilection for scandal. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Eugène Druet.

Man in Chainmail Tunic Posing as a Dying Soldier. Artist: Adrien Constant de Rebecque (Swiss, Lausanne 1806-1876 Lausanne). Dimensions: Image: 17.9 x 24.2 cm (7 1/16 x 9 1/2 in.)Mount: 27.2 x 37 cm (10 11/16 x 14 9/16 in.). Date: ca. 1863.The early Swiss photographer Constant Delessert was likely introduced to the medium by his wife's Parisian cousins Édouard and Benjamin Delessert. Although Constant was known through exhibition records, his membership in the Société Française de Photographie, and his writings on photographic processes, his work was unfamiliar until recently, when a series of his albums appeared at auction, filled primarily with standard portraits of family members and others, city and landscape views, and a few genre scenes. This unusual photograph, however, stands apart from his more typical work. Undoubtedly made as a study for a painting, it shows a man dressed in a chainmail tunic, striking the classic pose of a dying warrior. By the early 1860s photography ha

This image, dating to around 1899, shows The Princes in the Tower. The princes were Edward V and his brother Richard Duke of York, the sons of Edward IV and his Queen, Elizabeth Woodville. Their uncle, Richard of Gloucester, later Richard III, came after them in the succession. Sir Thomas More believed that the boys were murdered by their uncle (probably around 1483). Shakespeare portrayed Richard III as the murderous uncle. More wrote that the princes were buried at the stair-foot, meetly deep. However, Henry Tudor (Henry VII) also had much to gain and some believe he had the princes murder

Paul Gauguin was born in Paris in 1848 and spent some of his childhood in Peru. He worked as a stockbroker with little success, and suffered from bouts of severe depression. He also painted. In 1891, Gauguin, frustrated by lack of recognition at home and financially destitute, sailed to the tropics to escape European civilization and 'everything that is artificial and conventional'. His time there, particularly in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands, was the subject of much interest both then and in modern times due to his alleged sexual exploits. He was known to have had trysts with several native girls, some of whom appear as subjects of his paintings. Gauguin died on 8 May 1903 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery (Cimetière Calvaire), Atuona, Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia.
