(231.14 x 226.06 cm), Cotton; appliqué; quilted, United States, 19th century, Baltimore Album Quilts like this one represent a type of quilt that was wildly popular from about 1845 to 1855 in Baltimore, Maryland. Album Quilts were originally conceived as group projects where each woman would create a single block that would later be joined with others to form a quilt. As the style became more popular, however, special designs were created to be sold as kits. In this century the album quilt tradition continues, particularly in advocacy of a variety of social causes, including women's suffrage, civil rights and AIDS.Bandana (USA); Manufactured by Eureka Printing Company; cottonCoverlet Made 1850 Ohio. The execution of this elegant bedcover required great skill and an immense commitment of time on the part of the maker. In the 18th century, white bedcovers were mainly a privilege of the wealthy, as they were difficult to keep clean, but American production of cotton reduced the monetary investment involved in whole cloth quilts. A direct descendent of John Whittlesey (1623ñ1704), an original settler of Saybrook, Connecticut, Ursula Whittlesey was the daughter of Ambrose Whittlesey (a sailor by profession) (1761ñ1827) and Ann Waterhouse (1758ñ1838). She married Edward Sanford (1798ñ1888), a farmer, in 1828. The donor of the bedcover was the makerís granddaughter.. Cotton, plain weave; quilted and stitched in trapunto technique .
