Aviation in Britain Before the First World War Cody aircraft mark IC (Cathedral - so named because of its size and the size of the hangar it required and the katahedral (lower at the wing tips) arrangement of the wings) in flight. The most important change made with this mark was moving the pilots seat to in front of the engine. The aircraft was altered several more times, here the additional elevators at the side of the central one (which has now been split in two down the centre, the rudder is in the original position above the elevator and a tail skid has been added. Particularly with his earlier aircraft Cody made constant adjustments to the arrangement of the flying surfaces, often after crashes, in order to obtain better performance and handling. These changes mean that identifying specific sub-marks of Cody aircraft can at times be very difficult, it should also be remembered that because of this constant evolution of his aircraft Cody would probably not have classified them in

Operation Deep Freeze I - Rescue Otter Plane Delivered by Coast Guard Icebreaker Eastwind. Coast Guardsmen pull a Navy Otter float-aid plane clear of the icebreaker Eastwind's flight deck for take-off in search of an Otter with seven Navy men missing on a flight to Marie Byrd Land. The Eastwind delivered the Otter 400 miles to Little America McMurdo Sound. Lowering the plane by crane to a level spot on the Great Ross Ice Barrier the crew worked in sub-zero temperature to ready the plane for hurried take-off. Getting the plane onto the ice shelf was not without incident. Buffeted by winds the ship raked its sides against the overhanging edges of the ice barrier, causing the Otter's wing tip to be shorn off. Men hurriedly repaired the damaged wing with a jury rig wooden tip. This same Otter on February 9, 1956, found the seven tired cold men missing since February 3rd, 125 miles northeast of Little America Base 5 walking towards Okuma Bay from an area of Rockefeller Plateau where they ha

One and Only. Pictured under the radar dome of a Coast Guard plane is the 9-lens wonder camera of the Coast and Geodetic Survey - the only one of its kind in the world. Eight to ten months of each year the U.S. Coast Guard and the Coast and Geodetic Survey "team up" on map-making operations. The Coast Guard plane especially modified for this activity carries the big camera (camera and equipment weigh 750 pounds) clamped to a permanent mount installed for the purpose. The pilot must maintain a constant altitude - 13,750 feet is usual "shooting height" - while the camera, operated by two members of the Coast and Geodetic Survey, photographs the terrain below. The "pictures" are about 3-foot square and cover a ground area of about 1200 square miles. From these photos, details are transferred to maps for basic defense and for navigation charts. There's a reason for that sign "hands off" estimated replacement value of this wonder camera is $100,000!.

A photo of model airplane builders James B. Newman and Robert L. McDonald preparing for a flight with models of the M2-F2 and a Mothership”. In 1968 a test flight was made on the Rosamond dry lakebed, Rosamond, California. The original idea of lifting bodies was conceived about 1957 by Dr. Alfred J. Eggers, Jr., then the assistant director for Research and Development Analysis and Planning at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics' Ames Aeronautical Laboratory, Moffett Field, California. Nose cone studies led to the design known as the M-2, a modified half-cone, rounded on the bottom and flat on top, with a blunt, rounded nose and twin tail fins.To gather flight data on this configuration, models were found to be an effective method. A special twin-engined, 14-foot model mothership” was used for carrying the M2-F2 model to altitude and a launch, much as was being done with the B-52 for the full-scale lifting bodies. A Fairchild C-82 Packet is purposely destroyed by researchers at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory. In response to an escalating number of transport aircraft crashes in the mid-1940s, the NACA researchers undertook a decade-long investigation into a number of issues surrounding low-altitude aircraft crashes. The tests were conducted at the Ravenna Arsenal, approximately 60 miles south of the Lewis laboratory in Cleveland, Ohio. The aircraft were excess military transports from World War II. The aircraft was guided down the runway at speeds of 80 to 105 miles per hour. It came into contact with poles which tore open the 1500-gallon fuel tanks in the wings before reaching the barriers at the end of the runway. Fuel poured from the tanks and supply lines, resulting in the spread of both liquid fuel and a large cloud of spray. Solomon Weiss developed a method of dying the fuel red to improve its visibility during the crashes. This red
