The front and hind legs are interconnected by means of an H-shaped cross with pen and hole connections, the pens of which stick through the legs. The slanted billioned backstyles end in bird heads and rest on the cross. The handrail rests on Stutten near the seat and these also serve as hind legs. The backrest is connected both above and below by an intermediate rule. The top line contains a sliced star shape in the middle. There is a panel between the lines that is covered with brown leather and is secured with copper nails. The design of their back is taken verbatim from plate 9 of Robert Manwaring's modest pattern book The Cabinet and Chair-Maker's Real Friend and Companion, which was published in London in 1765, and available in Boston by January 1767. But whereas Manwaring's chair design had plain straight legs and was considered of modest scale and importance, the Boston maker considered his handiwork top of the line and added elegantly carved cabriole legs and claw-and-ball feet.. Although the molded front legs, stretchers, and serpentine-front saddle seats are more frequently found in Philadelphia seating furniture, the secondary woods used in the seat frame-yellow pine and oak-are more typical of a southern locale. The design of this chair's back was taken directly from George Hepplewhite's "The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide" (1788). Carved chairs with upholstery over the rail were formal enough for a parlor setting, but the durable horsehair cover made them suitable for use in the dining room as well. "Turkeywork" refers to a type of woven fabric with a knotted-and-cut wool pile that was made in England in imitation of Turkish carpets. Used for chairs, cushions, and table coverings, the fabric was exported in matching sets for chairs. Decorative fringe once covered the row of nails around the seat and back. Made in United StatesArmchair ca. 1860 Léon Marcotte French This armchair is part of a suite of Louis XVI-style furniture that John Taylor Johnston (1820-1893) purchased from the firm of Ringuet-Leprince and L. Marcotte in about 1856. This international firm had showrooms in both Paris and New York, and it is believed that at least some of the pieces of the suite were made in Paris for the New York commission. Johnston, a railroad executive and the first president of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, used the furniture in the music room of his residence at 8 Fifth Avenue. The suite (68.69.1-68.69.11, 68.165.1-68.165.6) includes two sofas, two armchairs, a table, two matching cabinets, a third large cabinet, six matching side chairs, a pair of lyre-back side chairs, and a firescreen. After Ringuet-Leprince retired in 1860, the firm became known as L. Marcotte and Company. Léon Marcotte was New York's most noted cabinetmaker and interior decorator during the 1860s.. The chair maker built the wood armature that determined the chairs basic outline, while the upholsterer determined its ultimate shape. Although the C-scroll arms are typical of Philadelphia work, this chair was produced in New York City. The secondary woods are common in New York-made furniture, as are the square rear legs and the method of joining the seat rails to the front legs. In addition, the claw-and-ball feet, distinguished by a squashed ball with narrow, downward-sloping talons, are distinctively New York..
