The rich carving on each chaise à la Reine indicate that they may have been part of an important commission. Throughout the frame, elegant scrolls, reeds, acanthus leaves, shells, and bosses are carved and gilded. At the center of the top rail, exotic birds flank a prominent cartouche and a pattern of scrolling ribbons. Similarly, the seat-rail displays a cartouche in front that echoes this design element. Woodwork-FurnitureWork and writing table (table en chiffonière) ca. 1760 Bernard II van Risenburgh The table en chiffonière is a type of furniture that appeared in France around 1750, as patrons sought to combine a sense of elegance and comfort in their daily furnishings. The top is decorated in floral marquetry of veneered tulipwood and end-cut kingwood, and is hinged at the back, opening to three compartments inside. This kind of table typically included drawers that could be used to hold papers, jewelry, and chiffons or cloth, hence the tables name. Although van Risenburgh produced a quantity of these small yet functional pieces (similar models can be seen in the Wrightsman collection at the museum—see 1984.471.1 and 1977.102.7), the care he took in making each table is visible in the careful coordination of shaped veneer panels with foliate gilt-bronze mounts, which both embellish and protect the veneer at the corners, legs, and feet of the table. Jean-Baptiste Tilliard I opened a furniture shop on rue de Cléry in 1730, which produced many pieces for the royal apartments at Versailles. When Tilliard I retired in 1764, his son Jacques-Jean-Baptiste Tilliard assumed control of the family workshop. The gilded beechwood frames are richly decorated with scrolls, floral sprays, acanthus leaves, and the for this workshop characteristic heart-shaped motifs on the crest rail and in the center of the sea trail. The backsides of the frames are incised indicating that these chairs were not meant to be placed against the wall but intended to be seen in the round..
