Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae: Temples on the Isle of Tiber 1582 Etienne DuPérac French This print comes from the museums copy of the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae (The Mirror of Roman Magnificence) The Speculum found its origin in the publishing endeavors of Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri. During their Roman publishing careers, the two foreign publishers - who worked together between 1553 and 1563 - initiated the production of prints recording art works, architecture and city views related to Antique and Modern Rome. The prints could be bought individually by tourists and collectors, but were also purchased in larger groups which were often bound together in an album. In 1573, Lafreri commissioned a title page for this purpose, which is where the title ‘Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae first appears. Lafreri envisioned an ideal arrangement of the prints in 7 different categories, but during his lifetime, never appears to have offered one standard, bound set of prints. Inst

Classical Amphitheater. Artist: Louis Jean Desprez (French, Auxerre 1743-1804 Stockholm). Dimensions: Sheet: 8 1/4 13 9/16 in. (21 34.5 cm). Date: ca. 1777-84.Originally trained as an architect, Desprez is best known for his drawings for the abb de Saint Non's Voyage pittoresque de Naples et de Sicile (1781-86), and from 1784 on, his theater designs for the Gustav III's opera house in Stockholm. This sheet may have originally been part of a sketchbook and can, in any case, be considered as part of a group of sketches of similar dimensions, executed in the same media, and all lightly squared. The majority of such drawings are conserved at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Sweden. The subjects of these sketches often feature classical architecture either observed in or inspired by the environs of Rome, southern Italy, or Sicily, with figures enacting imagined historical events. This drawing appears to represent an ancient theater in a style influenced by the many ruins Despr

The Nuremberg Chronicle is an illustrated world history. Its structure follows the story of human history as related in the Bible; it includes the histories of a number of important Western cities. Written in Latin by Hartmann Schedel, with a version in German translation by Georg Alt, it appeared in 1493. It is one of the best-documented early printed books. It is classified as an incunabulum - that is, a book, pamphlet, or broadside that was printed (not handwritten) before the year 1501 in Europe. It is also one of the first to successfully integrate illustrations and text. Latin scholars refer to it as Liber Chronicarum (Book of Chronicles) as this phrase appears in the index introduction of the Latin edition. English speakers have long referred to it as the Nuremberg Chronicle after the city in which it was published. German speakers refer to it as Die Schedelsche Weltchronik (Schedel's World History) in honour of its author. The illustrations in many copies were hand-coloured aft
