Its French name, commode en console, indicates that it is, in fact, a combination of a console table, designed to stand against a wall, and a commode, or chest of drawers.1 A small number of such tables are known today, and they appear to have been in vogue for a short period during the middle of the eighteenth century.2 Five were sold by the fashionable marchand-mercier Lazare Duvaux (ca. 1703-1758) between December of 1753 and February of 1757.3 They were veneered with tulipwood with the exception of one table, by far the most expensive of all, which was mounted with lacquer. In Duvaux's shop records it was described as a lacquer commode, with console legs, decorated with gilded bronze. It was sold for 1,150 livres on 13 May 1756.4Considered as part of the wall decoration, most console tables were madeArthur Johnson, Chest of Drawers, c 1938 Chest of DrawersCenter Table. Mid-nineteenth century parlors were often arranged around a center table, where family and friends would gather. Marble tops provided a spill proof surface for beverages and oil lamps. The brass castors on the table's feet facilitated easy movement across the highly patterned wall-to-wall carpeting popular during the period. (43.2 x 46.0 x 43.2 cm), Huang-hua-li hardwood and ta-li marble, China, 17th century, Barrel-form stools with four, five, or six openings were very popular during Ming (1368-1644) and are among the most pleasing forms in classical Chinese furniture. The slender ribs, large openings, and unobtrusive joinery combine to create an elegant, light, and airy space-frame. Few pairs of Ming-style barrel-form stools in fine hardwood have survived, however, and this rare, exceptionally well-crafted set is distinguished by its round marble seats with their bold, natural patterns evocative of mountain landscapes. The precision of the bridle and tenon joinery is highly refined and each of the curved sections fit together with remarkable accuracy, imparting a sense of structural continuity and visual harmony.Giraffe piano, Joannes van Raay and Zonen, c. 1830 - c. 1840 Giraffepiano, harp -shaped high cupboard with green damask covered and with decorations in copper, with two twisted legs. The set was designed by the Bolognese architect Filippo Pelagio Palagi, who in 1832 was commissioned by Carlo Alberto, king of Sardinia, to redecorate his royal palaces. One of these palaces was at Racconigi, and Palagi designed this set of furniture for the principal drawing room next to the royal bedroom. The armchairs and sofa are distinguished by the sculptural treatment of the crest rails and by the quality and refinement of the veneering. The set of furniture was executed by Gabrielle Cappello, whose workshop produced many of Pelagi's designs for Racconigi. The silk upholstery fabric on the armchairs and sofa is a reproduction of the original covering; it was woven by the textile firm that originally produced the fabric in the 1830s.. Between 1683 and 1687, a number of Le Bruns sketches for items of furniture were executed in solid silver and supplied to the Galerie des Glaces (Hall of Mirrors) at the Palace of Versailles. In 1689, needing funds to pay his troops, Louis had these marvels of craftsmanship melted down; they yielded about 20,000 tons of silver bullion attesting to the immense quantity of these extraordinary items. Before they were destroyed however, elements of their shapes and decoration were adapted to less valuable materials such as gilt-bronze and wood. With its winged caryatid figures, this gilded oak table which dates to ca. 1690, resembles one shown in an etching of the Galerie des Glaces, and it is likely a later and humbler version of a piece originally made of solid silver..
