Brooches like these are characterized as serpentine because of their twisting, snakelike shape. Brooches of this type are found all over western and central Europe, most often in Italy. Both men and women are buried with them, and although they are usually made from bronze, examples have also been found made from gold, silver, and even iron.. Thracian or Celtic The mouthpiece of this bit consists of a U-shaped high port and small rollers on both sides (one is missing). The small bronze rings on the sides were attached to the bridle. The two bronze shanks, from which hooks hang for the reins, are connected by a thick horizontal bar acting as a curb. The curb bar would have pressed the horses chin when the reins were pulled back. This object is also an example of the earliest type of curb bit to have been invented. It seems to have developed in the Balkans among Thracian and Scordisci (Eastern Celts) cultures between the 3rd and 1st century B.C. These populations were known for their great equestrian skills, especially at war. Examples of these bits have also occasionally been found in some western Celtic burials dating from the 1st century B.C., but they mostly spread in Roman territories during the conquest, thanks to the Thracian and East Celtic cavalrymen incorporated in the armyPair of Earrings 4th-7th century Coptic. According to the dynastic history of the Wei, they were led into China by a mysterious animal spirit that was shaped like a horse and that bellowed like an ox.(One of a pair; see 24.174.6). Some show no signs of use, while others are quite worn. The AvarsThe Avars were a nomadic tribe of mounted warriors from the Eurasian steppe. The Byzantine emperor Justinian negotiated with them in the sixth century to protect the Empires northern border along the Black Sea. Emboldened by their subjugation of numerous tribes, they unsuccessfully attempted to seize the Empires capital, Constantinople. They remained a scourge of both Byzantium and the Western kingdoms until Charlemagne defeated them through a series of campaigns in the 790s and early 800s.All the money and treasure that the Avars had been years amassing was seized, and no war in which the Franks have ever engaged.. brought them such riches and such booty. Early Dynastic Period Flint bangles such as this one are mainly found in burials. The deceased often wore multiple bangles together, on one or both forearms. These items were in use for a relatively short time, only during the Early Dynastic period, and most examples date specifically to the First Dynasty. They were made through a combination of flaking and grinding. Flint bangles were extremely difficult to produce and demonstrate the exceptionally high degree of expertise achieved by Egypts flint knappers. They also show that Ancient Egyptians used flint for personal adornment and display, not just to make implements needed for utilitarian and subsistence purposes.. Celtic This piece testifies to the willingness of Celtic craftsmen to experiment with the form and decoration of the neck ring. With elegant simplicity, it brings together the abstract geometric designs of northern metalwork and the curvilinear motifs of a Mediterranean aesthetic.Flat in section, the neck ring is decorated with an incised geometric pattern of zigzags and punched dots that includes a motif reminiscent of sunbursts. Its "swan's neck" terminals, which fold back on themselves, are incised with a motif derived from the classical Greek palmette.. (56.7 g). Date: 11th-8th century B.C..The snaffle bit is the simplest type of horse bit, and has an effect on the bars (part of the horses' jaw without teeth) and the corners of the lips. The mouthpiece of this bit is composed of a single twisted bar. Rings for the bridle and reins, now lost, were attached to the side eyelets. Such bits and other tack parts are found in male warrior burials associated with the Hallstatt culture, in which the use of the horse was a symbol of wealth and high status. Wrought ironTemple Model 200 B.C.-A.D. 500 Mezcala Stone models in the Mezcala style come largely from the present-day state of Guerrero, in southwest Mexico. A particularly long-lived tradition, these works may have been produced over some one thousand years, from as early as 500 B.C. Little is known about their archaeological contexts, and there are few points of reference with surviving architecture in the region. It is possible that these models emulate buildings with stone columns, such as those from Cuetlajuchitlán; alternatively they could recall above- or below-ground funerary structures, in which case the columns would represent wood supports of a tomb or a funerary pyre. Mezcala models may have served multiple functions over time, in keeping with the Mesoamerican custom of repurposing or recarving stone objects. Oblong models, for example, may have been recarved from celts, ritual tools of great symbolic importance. Date: probably 10th-12th century. This charming object was designed to hold kohl, a black cosmetic powder applied around the eyes. In the past, kohl was widely used by men and children as well as women. It was thought not only to accentuate the beauty of the eyes, but also to guard against the glaring sun, ward off evil, and discourage eye disease. The narrow drill hole at the top of this flask would have accommodated a slender stick to collect the cosmetic. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.Earring. Egyptian.
