Photography in the Royal Air Force, 1939-1945. A trainee air observer points a Type F.24 aerial camera at the photographer. The F.24 was adopted as the RAF's standard camera for general-purpose vertical or oblique aerial photography in 1925, and could be either hand-held, or fixed in a mounting inside the aircraft. When operated by hand, the Type 21 mounting with hand grips and an eye piece was fitted, as seen here.

First aid demonstration at the Women's Transport Service Camp at Aldershot during World War II. The Auxiliary Territorial Service was the women's branch of the British Army during the Second World War. It was formed on 9 September 1938, initially as a women's voluntary service, and existed until 1 February 1949, when it was merged into the Women's Royal Army Corps.

Cadet Tony. Army Cadet Tony Hope, 15, took French leave from school to attend an inspection by Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery. The next day his teacher gave him two strokes of the cane for being absent. Tony was one of 300 cadets selected from all over his county to form a guard of honour when Monty received the Freedom of the City of Durham. The Territorial Association asked the education authorities to give the chosen cadets the necessary time off school. Sunderland, South Shields and Gateshead agreed, said Tony's adjutant. Durham County - which controls Tony's school at Shiney Row - said "No." But Tony's mother told him: "You go - it is an honour." Tony went. At his home Tony said: "It was smashing to be inspected by Monty. I would have suffered half a dozen stroke: rather than miss it." Tony's headmaster, Mr. R. Dickinson, said: "Hope made no approach to me. January 21, 1953.

Detachment 101, an enigmatic Allied intelligence and special operations unit during World War II, played a pivotal role in the Burmese theater. Operating deep in the jungles of Burma, their mission was multi-faceted, encompassing guerrilla warfare, espionage, and sabotage against Japanese forces. Comprising a diverse group of individuals, from OSS agents to indigenous fighters, they effectively disrupted Japanese supply lines, gathered critical intelligence, and supported resistance movements.
