Virgin and Child. Artist: Attributed to Simon Bening (Netherlandish, Ghent () 1483/84-1561 Bruges). Dimensions: Overall 10 x 8 1/4 in. (25.4 x 21 cm), with added strip of 3/8 in. (1 cm) at top; painted surface 9 5/8 x 8 1/4 in. (24.4 x 21 cm). Date: ca. 1520.Bening, a celebrated miniaturist, has taken the Virgin and Child from David's Rest on the Flight into Egypt (displayed nearby) and placed them in a different context. Joseph is absent, and there is no overt reference to the journey of the Holy Family. Thus, in keeping with a contemporary trend toward the secularization of religious scenes, Mary is presented as the very model of a nurturing mother. A stream of milk flows from her breast to the lips of the Child, who turns toward the viewer and gestures with a spoon, linking physical nourishment with the spiritual nourishment he offers. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Devotional plaque with The Madonna and Child with Donors. Culture: Italian, perhaps Emilia-Romagna (possibly Faenza) or the Marche. Dimensions: Overall (confirmed): 17 1/4 × 13 1/4 × 1 3/4 in. (43.8 × 33.7 × 4.4 cm). Date: ca. 1490-1500.Unlike many maiolica objects, this plaque has no function beyond displaying a painted image to the viewer. It retains the sense of domesticity associated with Renaissance maiolica vessels and tableware, but was made to encourage religious devotion. The small format and tightly cropped view of the Virgin and Child create an intimate relationship with the viewer, and the small kneeling donors at lower left present a model for worship in the home. The plaque imitates fifteenth-century panel painting and relief sculpture in both subject and form and even includes an integral frame. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Hagar and Ishmael 1776, reworked 1803 Benjamin West American This painting illustrates the plight of Ishmael after he and his mother have been turned out of Abrahams household (Genesis 21). West exhibited the picture at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1776. In 1803 he changed both the figures and the background, repainted the angel, added draperies, and submitted the painting for a second exhibition. The Royal Academy ruled that no artist could show a work twice. West, who was the academys president from 1792 to 1820, was outraged. The controversy continued until 1806, when West was finally allowed to exhibit the picture. Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #4573. Salvator Mundi. Artist: Domenico Fetti (Italian, Rome () 1591/92-1623 Venice). Dimensions: 23 1/2 x 17 1/4 in. (59.7 x 43.8 cm). Date: ca. 1622-23.The picture was painted in Venice for Count Francesco Gambara of Brescia. Fetti had moved to Venice from Mantua following a fight with a fellow painter. He was a master of loose brushwork, as this late work testifies. It shows Christ seated in clouds above a landscape, his left hand on an orb, his right raised in blessing, as he directs his gaze towards the viewer. The playful cherubs--especially the one peeking out beneath his blue cloak--and the illusionistic character of the composition are a sort of homage to the work of the great sixteenth-century painter Correggio. Virgin and Child ca. 1470-75 Andrea della Robbia Italian Andrea was the nephew and disciple of Luca della Robbia, who developed the blue and white glazes used on terracotta sculpture with which the name della Robbia is associated. By the time he made the Lehman Madonna, about 1470-75, Andrea had for some years been chiefly responsible for the output of the family shop in the via Guelfa, Florence. Although he was a faithful follower of his uncle's style, his own personality emerged in works such as this, with its exceptionally high relief, in which he achieved monumental forms without sacrificing any of that sweetness and harmony of expression for which Luca is so admired..
