The battle of Yser 1914 by Georges Scott. The Battle of the Yser (Bataille de lYser) took place in October 1914 between the towns on Nieuwpoort and Diksmuide along a stretch of the Yser river and Yperlee canal in Belgium. The fierce struggle at the Ansung River, the heroicity of Captain Matsuzaki; Anjô No Watashi Daigekisen Matzaki Taii Yûmo. Captain Matsuzaki Naomi leads his men over the Ansung River on July 28, 1894. He was hit but encouraged his army to attack the enemy until he was killed by a second bullet. Two cavemen seem to be having a jolly time firing arrows and throwing spears from the back of an unidentifiable beast. Drawing on a postcard by George Ranstead, an amateur artist of the Great War who served in the Army Pay Corps. Ranstead was one of many soldiers of WWI who took up drawing as a hobby. His subjects range from wartime humour to pictures of pretty girls and are clearly influenced by images in the illustrated magazines of the period. circa 1916

Coiling the Cable in the After-tank on Board the Great Eastern at Sheerness: Visit of H.R.H. the Prince of Wales on May 23rd, 1865 1865-66 Robert Charles Dudley British One of the 19th century's great technological achievements was to lay a telegraphic cable beneath the Atlantic, allowing messages to speed back and forth between North America and Europe in minutes, rather than ten or twelve days by steamer. An initially successful attempt in 1858, led by Cyrus W. Field and financed by the Atlantic Telegraph Company, failed after three weeks. Two working cables were finally laid in July and September 1866, the result of repeated efforts by the indefatigable Field, a cadre of engineers, technicians, and sailors, two groups of financial backers, and significant help from the British and United States navies.
