US Civil War. Battle of Antietam, also called Battle of Sharpsburg, Sept. 17, 1862. AFTERMATH AT BLOODY LANE, a painting by Captain James Hope, of the 2nd Vermont Infantry. This was the center of Lee's defensive line, an 800-yard-long sunken road, where some 5,000 men were killed and wounded, from both the Confederate and Union armies. James Hope painted this and four other Antietam battle scenes in the 1880s, from sketches he while serving as a scout and mapmaker made during made of the battle (BSLOC_2018_7_168)

Excavation of the Terracotta Guardian Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, near Xian (Sian), China. Qin Shi Huang was king of the Chinese State of Qin from 247 BCE to 221 BCE and became the first emperor of a unified China in 221 BCE, ruling until his death in 210 BCE. He was buried in his mausoleum with a terracotta army of over 8000 soldiers, 130 chariots, 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses. They were intended to help Qin Shi rule another empire in the afterlife. The army was discovered in 1974 by local farmers who were drilling for water. The place is now a major archaeological site and tourist attraction.

The Mongol invasions of Japan of 1274 and 1281 were major military invasions undertaken by Kublai Khan to conquer the Japanese islands after the submission of Korea. Despite their ultimate failure, the invasion attempts are of historical importance, because they set a limit on Mongol expansion, and rank as nation-defining events in Japanese history. The Japanese were successful, in part because the Mongols lost up to 75% of their troops and supplies as a result of major storms at sea. These were named 'kamikaze' or divine winds by the Japanese.
