Coast Guard Introduces RATAN, (Series 2 of 4). The U. S. Coast Guard today introduced RATAN, its latest electronic aid to small boating. This represents the first time that television has been incorporated into an aids to navigation system for civilian maritime use. RATAN, which stands for Radar and Television Aid to Navigation, utilizes an image provided by a high-definition shore-based radar which is then transmitted by UHF television for the reception aboard ships and boats in the general area. The rotating circular radar image is converted by the scan conversion tube to the rectangular sweep used by conventional television.
