The USS Texas was theUnited States' first battleship. Built in the U.S. Navy Yards in Norfolk, Virginia, it was commissioned in 1886. Together with the USS Marblehead, it took part in the invasion and bombardment of the fortress of Cayo del Tore in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, during the Spanish American War. It was 308 feet 10 inches in length. In 1911, it was renamed the USS San Marcos. This illustration dates to 1896.

She was built in Spain by the Vickers-Armstrong subsidiary Sociedad Española de Construcción Naval, and saw service during the Spanish Civil War, when she was torpedoed and sunk by destroyers of the Spanish Republican Navy during the Battle of Cape Palos July 1937
